Abstract

Since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, Chinese ancient art overseas exhibitions have gone through nearly 70 years of development. Through detailed analysis of major case studies, the study describes the ways in which Chinese ancient art overseas exhibitions developed in scope and accelerated in number during this period. Thematically, exhibitions have become more diverse in their content, thus expanding both their chronological and spatial breadth, and the depth of their interpretative potential. In terms of organization and management, larger numbers of international museums and cultural institutions have participated in the mounting of Chinese exhibitions overseas, a process that has injected fresh vitality into the cause of cultural heritage interaction, but which also brings new challenges for the heritage sector to address. Guided by China's foreign policy, spatial and temporal distribution and thematic features of Chinese ancient art overseas exhibitions are influenced by political, economic and cultural factors, reflecting the improvement of Chinese strength and the development of museum undertakings.
