De huidige arbeidsmarkt vereist dat werknemers wendbaar zijn, zodat ze beschikken over expertise die waardevol is voor organisaties en voor hun eigen loopbaan. Dit vereist dat werknemers zich aanpassen aan veranderende eisen en behoeften ten aanzien van expertise. Dit aanpassingsvermogen wordt flexpertise genoemd: het vermogen van een individu om zich continu aan te passen aan de vraag naar bijscholing, omscholing, het loslaten van routines, het toepassen van expertise in een nieuwe werkcontext, en het creëren van nieuwe expertise. Mensen die goed zijn in het tijdig en effectief vernieuwen van hun expertise staan bekend als flexperts. In de praktijk is het vernieuwen van expertise geen gemakkelijke opgave. Het is niet langer zozeer de kunst om expert te worden in een specifiek vakgebied, maar eerder de uitdaging om over een unieke cocktail van expertisegebieden te beschikken en deze van waarde te maken. Dit artikel biedt de wetenschappelijke basis voor HR om praktijken te ontwikkelen ter ondersteuning van de verschuiving van expertise- naar flexpertise-ontwikkeling, zodat mensen duurzaam inzetbaar worden en blijven. Dit artikel is gebaseerd op het proefschrift van Dr. Lonneke Sacha Frie getiteld “Van Expert tot Flexpert: Hoe werknemers voldoen aan nieuwe expertisebehoeften gedurende hun loopbaan”, waarvoor zij de Best Dissertation Award 2024 ontving van het Dutch HRM Network, ondersteund door het Tijdschrift voor HRM.
