Abstract

Young and unemployed: member of a lost generation?

Young and unemployed: member of a lost generation?

This article addresses the issue of youth unemployment in the Netherlands. Due to their relatively low levels of work experience and the growing incidence of less stable forms of employment, young people are likely to suffer the most from the economic and financial crisis. In this research, the author studies the ways in which 35 young people cope with unemployment. The findings show that while young unemployed people are facing difficulties in finding work, they remain optimistic regarding their career prospects and they do not feel to be members of a ‘lost generation’.
