Abstract

[Job insecurity and presenteeism: An indirect effect through burnout

Y. Bogaerts, H. De Witte, H. Verlinden & V. Vermeulen, Gedrag & Organisatie, volume 30, March 2017, nr. 1, pp. 3-24

This study was designed to examine the relationship between job insecurity and presenteeism. Based on the Conservation of Resources Theory, we expected a positive relationship between quantitative and qualitative job insecurity and presenteeism through two core dimensions of burnout, namely exhaustion and depersonalization. A two-wave dataset of 520 respondents was collected. The hypotheses were tested using mediation analysis by Preacher and Hayes (2008). Results showed no overall effect of quantitative or qualitative job insecurity on presenteeism. We found a positive indirect effect from both dimensions of job insecurity on presenteeism through exhaustion. We also found a negative direct effect of quantitative job insecurity on presenteeism. The positive indirect effect and the negative direct effect of quantitative job insecurity neutralized each other, leaving no overall effect of quantitative job insecurity on presenteeism.
