Samenvatting

De belangstelling voor het concept organisatiepurpose is de afgelopen decennia enorm toegenomen. Zowel in wetenschappelijke als professionele managementpublicaties worden de vermeende voordelen van organisatiepurpose voor organisaties en hun stakeholders breed uitgedragen. Organisaties profileren zich dan ook steeds vaker met hun purpose, bijvoorbeeld om te kunnen inspelen op de groeiende behoeften van werknemers aan betekenisvol werk en het krijgen van respect en waardering voor hun werk. In dit essay wordt een conceptueel model van organisatiepurpose gepresenteerd, gebaseerd op een kwalitatief onderzoek dat de auteurs uitvoerden onder 44 experts uit de wetenschap en de praktijk. Op basis hiervan wordt organisatiepurpose gedefinieerd als het bestaansrecht van een organisatie, gekenmerkt door betekenis, aspiratie, richting, unificatie en motivatie’. Daarnaast specificeert het model drie psychologische mechanismen die de vermeende positieve relatie tussen organisatiepurpose en werknemersuitkomsten kunnen verklaren, te weten zinvolheid (‘meaningfulness’), zelfverwezenlijking (‘self-determination’) en persoon-organisatie-fit (‘person–organization fit’). De relatie tussen organisatiepurpose en werknemersuitkomsten is volgens het model afhankelijk van vier contextuele factoren: authenticiteit, balans, communicatie en perceptie van impact. Het essay sluit af met de bruikbaarheid van het conceptueel model voor organisaties die via hun organisatiepurpose werknemers willen aantrekken, boeien en behouden.
