Abstract

Samenvatting

Technologische ontwikkelingen veranderen voortdurend de vraag naar vaardigheden in het werk en de arbeidsmarkt. Indien werknemers hun vaardigheden niet aanpassen aan deze veranderende vraag, verliezen deze hun waarde voor de arbeidsmarkt. Dit wordt ook wel economische kwalificatieveroudering genoemd. Het is dus cruciaal dat werknemers de mogelijkheid krijgen om nieuwe vaardigheden te ontwikkelen. Deze bijdrage onderzoekt de relatie tussen economische kwalificatieveroudering en ontwikkelmogelijkheden in het werk en in hoeverre beide samengaan met ziekteverzuim. De data zijn afkomstig van 2.731 werknemers (leeftijd 18-66 jaar) van een Nederlands telecombedrijf, waarvan 1.444 respondenten de vragenlijst hebben ingevuld. We laten zien dat werknemers vooral ervaren dat hun technische, ICT- en probleemoplossende vaardigheden verouderd zijn. Ook blijkt dat het sterker ervaren van economische kwalificatieveroudering samengaat met een hogere verzuimfrequentie en dat bevlogenheid deze relatie medieert. Bovendien tonen we aan dat meer ontwikkelmogelijkheden in het werk samengaan met minder ervaren economische kwalificatieveroudering en een lagere verzuimfrequentie, zowel direct als indirect via een hogere bevlogenheid. Ontwikkelmogelijkheden in het werk zijn dus belangrijke hulpbronnen voor werknemers om te kunnen voldoen aan de voortdurend veranderende vraag naar vaardigheden en ter voorkoming van ziekteverzuim. Dit onderzoek biedt waardevolle inzichten voor organisaties en HR-professionals, met name voor organisaties die te maken hebben met een hoog tempo van (technologische) ontwikkelingen.
