Bredero’s Klucht van de molenaar (Farce of the miller), written in 1613. It illustrates that the first edition of 1618 (by publisher-bookseller Niclaes Verberg) contains different words, half lines and in one case even whole lines that are missing or changed in comparison with the second edition of 1619. This is what Bredero’s regular publisher Cornelis vander Plasse claims himself. Bredero’s play is written in a vernacular-like style resembling the variety spoken in Amsterdam at the time. The analysis of the two editions on the representation of dialect in a written form leads to a number of notable observations. In the 1619 edition all characters have a relatively stronger dialect than in the first edition, except in a few striking scenes. The opening monologue and the moralising end of the play offer dialect variants that are slightly more refined in the 1619 edition of this play. While religious literature disseminated in both Dutch and German has received a fair amount of attention in recent scholarship, religious and devotional texts that were available to readers in both Dutch and French have remained understudied. By providing an overview of the most important religious literature that was translated from French into Dutch and the other way around, and of texts originally composed in Latin in the Low Countries and translated into both vernacular languages, we argue that textual mobility between the two languages was frequent and reciprocal. Casestudies of two texts – Pierre Michault’s La Danse aux aveugles and Gerrit van der Goude’s Boexken vander Missen – further indicate that changes – or the lack thereof – in texts that moved between the two languages point to shared cultures of religious reading on equal terms. By now, it may be stated that this term is enduring and has given an impulse to the (attention for) literature for adolescents. Furthermore, several developments have changed relationships with regard to the production and distribution of literature within the Dutch literary industry in the past years. At the same time, there is no consensus on a definition of yal. This article presents the state of affairs of yal in the Netherlands. First, it shows how adolescent literature and yal relate to each other and provides a working definition of what can be understood as contemporary yal in the Netherlands. It then discusses the origin and introduction of the term in the Netherlands and explores the institutional developments that have taken place. Finally, it assesses current opinions of yal, followed by suggestions for further research. These suffixes often bring about an iterative and/or attenuative interpretation (cf. Weidhaas & Schmid 2015; Audring et al. 2017; Grestenberger & Kallulli 2019). They furthermore display the same morphological behaviour and pragmatic features. This paper presents a detailed dictionary and annotation study on the morphological, semantic, and pragmatic properties of these two suffixes. Our analysis is stated in terms of the three-way division of suffix types proposed in Creemers et al. (2018). We show that the -el and -er suffixes are categorially flexible suffixes, which are the closest to the stem with respect to other suffixes. As Creemers et al.’s typology (2018) fails to identify verbal suffixes in Dutch that are in the position closest to the stem, this paper adds an important, but previously unnoticed species to one of their affix types. We regard these authors as actors in the process of ‘foreign language making’. We compare the views of two 16th century authors (Noël de Berlemont and Gerard de Vivre) with those of Matthias Kramer, a ‘Sprachmeister’ (i.e. a professional language teacher) at the transition from the 17th to the 18th century.
