Because of John Chrysostom’s reputation of being an excellent, orthodox preacher and an authoritative bishop, a huge number of his homilies and other works have been preserved. This legacy gives a clear insight into his appreciation of the Eucharist, which is the subject of this paper. To John, it is a medicine that should be received with awe since it represents God, revealed in Christ. He relates its sacrificial character to Christ’s redeeming sacrifice, and highlights Christ’s presence equally in the bread and wine of the Eucharist and in the poor who therefore need to be cared for.
