Abstract

Samenvatting

Hoewel arbeidsomstandigheden door de eeuwen heen zijn verbeterd, met meer autonomie en flexibiliteit, zijn werkdruk en burn-out paradoxaal genoeg toegenomen. In deze verkorte versie van mijn oratie beschrij ik dat de moderne zoektocht naar zingeving en vrijheid kan leiden tot zelfuitbuiting, uitputting en een verminderde gemeenschapszin. Ik betoog dat neoliberale idealen, die de nadruk leggen op individuele vrijheid ten koste van sociale verbinding, centraal staan in de huidige problemen op de werkvloer. De focus van de samenleving op vrijheid heeft er specifiek toe geleid dat individuen hun leven moeten organiseren volgens economische efficiëntie, waardoor ze ‘ondernemers van het zelf’ worden. Deze verschuiving dwingt mensen om productiviteit boven sociale connecties te stellen, hetgeen kan leiden tot uitputting. Ik pleit voor een heroverweging van autonomie, waarin individuele en sociale behoeften in balans komen. In mijn toekomstige werk wil ik een nieuw concept van autonomie ontwikkelen dat zowel de sociale als de individuele aspecten van de menselijke natuur erkent. Ik daag ook de huidige opvatting uit waarin vrije tijd alleen in dienst staat van werk en pleit voor een bredere blik op werk en productiviteit. In mijn visie voor een post-work samenleving zie ik individuen als holistische wezens, met levens buiten hun betaalde banen die even waardevol zijn en aandacht verdienen.
