Abstract

Leren, flexibiliteit en innovatie lijken geen kenmerken die vaak met militaire organisaties worden geassocieerd. Zo verzuchtte de Britse generaal en militair historicus J.F.C. Fuller in zijn memoires: 'The soldier is the most conservative creature on earth. It is really dangerous to give him an idea, because he will not adopt it until it is obsolete, and then will not abandon it until it has nearly destroyed him.' Maar schijn bedriegt: een 'lerend leger' is zeer wel mogelijk. Zo wordt althans betoogd in het proefschrift waarop Tom Bijlsma, universitair docent aan de KMA en reserve majoor bij de landmacht, op 6 november 2009 promoveerde aan de Universiteit van Tilburg.
