This article analyses three works by Marie Metz-Koning, published between 1909 and 1918, in which the theme of homosexuality plays an important role. Drawing on Hanna Kubowitz’ model of queer reading alongside concepts from Dominique Maingueneau’s discourse analysis, it demonstrates how homosexuality is staged in these works. While Metz-Koning initially seems to focus on creating a sense of compassion for homosexuals, the representation of homosexuality in her novels shifts considerably over the following decade. Analyzing the different representations reveals the influence of the author’s evolving religious views related to this matter, particularly her turn to Theosophy, in which she began to seek refuge during the period in which these novels were written.
