Samenvatting

In de afgelopen vijftig jaar hebben zich grote veranderingen voltrokken onder de zelfstandige beroepsbevolking. De onder ‘zelfstandigheid’ gegroepeerde arbeidsregelingen zijn daarbij vooral aan het diversifiëren. Ik onderzocht de impact van deze veranderende arbeidsarrangementen op het mentaal welzijn van zelfstandigen, rekening houdend met ‘arbeidskwaliteit’ als belangrijke mediator. Dit essay werkt de hoofdbevindingen van dit onderzoek uit, en stelt dat de huidige variëteit in zelfstandige arbeid een rol speelt in het verklaren van verschillen in mentaal welzijn. Daarbij zijn vooral kwetsbare en onzekere arbeidsarrangementen binnen zelfstandig ondernemerschap vatbaar voor negatieve uitkomsten op het gebied van mentaal welzijn. Ook de beschikbaarheid van intrinsieke arbeidskwaliteit is voor sommige vormen van zelfstandigheid van cruciaal belang om welzijnsverschillen te verklaren.
