Complex and diverse use of ICT in four types of organisation. Diverging effects on the quality of labour?

Central aim of this contribution is the testing of a model which has been proposed for research on the relationship between ICT and the quality of jobs. According to Batenburg c.s., ICT influences job quality only in concordance with the design orientation of an organisation. The survey among 1,357 Dutch employees presented in this paper confirms that the influence of complexity and diversity of ICT on the quality of jobs is clearly intermediated by type of organisation. Several direct effects of ICT also use result from the analysis however, which supports the gist of technological determinism. Interestingly, these direct effects are particularly related to job strain as an indicator of job quality. The assumptions of the concordance-model are specifically being supported for short-cyclical labour as an job quality indicator. Furthermore, this study showed that ICT has the most favourable effects on the quality of jobs within the socio-technical type of organisation. For the Tayloristic type of organisation however, it was unexpectedly found that ICT also has some positive results on the quality of jobs. This result particularly appeared for jobs that are characterized by a high complexity of ICT use.
