Abstract

Samenvatting

Alcohol wordt wereldwijd ervaren als een groot gezondheidsprobleem dat jaarlijks leidt tot 3,3 miljoen sterfgevallen. Voornamelijk jongeren onder de 25 jaar zijn het meest kwetsbaar voor de negatieve gevolgen van alcohol. Bijgevolg is het van belang om inzicht te verwerven in de factoren die bijdragen aan dit alcoholgebruik. Onderzoek heeft vastgesteld dat het zien en delen van alcoholinhouden op sociale media een rol speelt in het offline alcoholgebruik en -misbruik van jongeren. Dit artikel, naar aanleiding van het proefschrift, heeft als doel om de theoretische inzichten over de complexe rol van sociale media in het alcoholgebruik uit te diepen. Hierbinnen worden drie doelstellingen vooropgesteld. (1) Het verkrijgen van een omvattend beeld over ervaringen met en beoordelingen van alcohol binnen een heterogeen medialandschap waarin diverse socialisatieactoren (, leeftijdsgenoten) en berichttypes op sociale media (efemeer – persistent, privaat – publiek) bestaan, (2) het in kaart brengen van aandachtsprocessen als een cruciaal onderliggend mechanisme in alcoholgerelateerde socialemedia-effecten, en (3) het vaststellen van de causale impact van verschillende types van alcoholinhouden op sociale media. Het artikel vat zes empirische studies samen, die werden uitgevoerd in het kader van het doctoraat. Innovatief aan deze studies is de multimethodische benadering bestaande uit cross-sectioneel onderzoek, focusgroepen, een inhoudsanalyse, een eyetrackingstudie, en een experimentele studie. Het proefschrift dat het kader vormt van dit artikel, was het eerste in het veld dat alcoholgelerateerde socialemedia-effecten in het heterogene medialandschap kon ontrafelen door rekening te houden met de meest recente ontwikkelingen. Op basis van de resultaten worden implicaties voor vervolgonderzoek, interventies, en beleid geformuleerd.
