Communicatie is een essentieel onderdeel van arbeidsre-integratie. Motiverende consultvoering biedt handvaten om op een positieve en ondersteunende manier in gesprek te gaan met langdurig zieke medewerkers. Het is gebaseerd op motiverende gespreksvoering en behoefte-ondersteunende principes vanuit de zelf-determinatietheorie. In dit doctoraat werd er aan de hand van drie studies een training in motiverende consultvoering ontwikkeld en geëvalueerd bij 31 artsen en paramedici die arbeidsongeschiktheid evalueren bij Vlaamse ziekenfondsen. Het kader van intervention mapping informeerde de ontwikkeling van de training en een implementatie- en evaluatieplan. Pre-post training analyses op basis van simulatiegesprekken toonden een significante toename in autonomie- en competentie-ondersteunende gespreksstrategieën, reflectief luisteren en motiverende gespreksvaardigheden. Tegelijkertijd verminderde het gebruik van controlerende taal door de professionals. Motiverende consultvoering werd als een wetenschappelijk gegronde manier bevonden om meer impact te hebben tijdens gesprekken en niet alleen snelle, maar vooral duurzame re-integratie te bevorderen. Bij het implementeren van motiverende consultvoering doorliepen de professionals een actief leer- en gedragsveranderingsproces dat gepaard ging met ambivalente overtuigingen over de effectiviteit, haalbaarheid en normativiteit van deze communicatiestijl. Inzichten in contextuele barrières zoals beperkte organisatorische ondersteuning kunnen verdere implementatie faciliteren, bijvoorbeeld ook bij leidinggevenden en HR-professionals in de werkomgeving. Verder onderzoek is nodig naar het effect van motiverende consultvoering op de re-integratieprocessen van zieke werknemers.
