Naar aanleiding van het 25-jarig jubileum van , meten we in dit artikel de stand van zaken op van het HRM-onderzoek uit Nederland en Vlaanderen van de voorbije 25 jaar. Het eerste artikel in het eerste nummer van de eerste jaargang (1998) van het tijdschrift, i.e. (Looise & Paauwe, 1998), vormt het referentiepunt voor onze terugblik. Om de stand van zaken op te maken, bevroegen we een aantal HRM-onderzoekers uit beide regio’s en deden bibliometrische analyses (VOS Viewer) van de publicaties uit onderzoeks- en vakgroepen die gelieerd zijn aan een Nederlandse of Vlaamse universiteit en zich profileren rond het vakgebied HRM. We stellen vast dat HRM als vakgebied duidelijk op de kaart gezet werd de voorbije 25 jaar. Zowel in onderwijs als onderzoek. In het onderzoek zien we een verschuiving in thema’s; van aandacht voor institutionele en meer maatschappelijk georiënteerde thema’s naar een focus op het organisatorisch perspectief op HRM en werknemersuitkomsten. Hoewel het onderzoek internationaal vandaag op de kaart staat en de banden met de praktijk worden aangehaald, creëert de verschuiving in thema’s – samen met de steeds strenger wordende vereisten voor onderzoek en een sterke focus op een positivistisch paradigma – ook een duidelijke spanning tussen en . Wil HRM-onderzoek het verschil (blijven) maken voor de praktijk in de toekomst, dan zullen diverse actoren inspanningen moeten leveren in lijn met een aantal reeds ingezette bewegingen, zoals o.a. meer aandacht voor de grote maatschappelijke uitdagingen via multidiciplinair onderzoek, openheid voor paradigma die toelaten de complexe realiteit te vatten, het sterker inzetten op projecten met de praktijk en een meer erkennend en waarderend HRM voor academici.
