Abstract

Samenvatting

Sinds 2016 worden de voornaamwoorden ‘hen’ en ‘die’ erkend als Nederlandstalige voorkeursvoornaamwoorden voor non-binaire personen. Het gebruik van genderneutrale taal bevordert een inclusieve samenleving. Daarnaast kan de toepassing van genderneutrale voornaamwoorden in de nieuwsmedia de kwaliteit en legitimiteit van journalistiek vergroten. Het gebruik van genderneutrale taal moet echter ook geaccepteerd worden door nieuwsgebruikers. Dit onderzoek focust daarom op de impact van inclusieve taal in Nederlandse nieuwsartikelen op de leesbaarheid en verwerking van de tekst. In een experiment worden de effecten van het gebruik van genderneutrale voornaamwoorden (‘hen/hun’ en ‘die/diens’) op begrijpelijkheid, ongemakkelijkheid, waardering en herinnering getest. Elke deelnemer ( = 296) kreeg twee nieuwsberichten te lezen. Het experimentele design werd bepaald door de factoren genderneutraliteit, cueing en verwijzingsvorm. De resultaten laten negatieve effecten op alle vier de afhankelijke variabelen zien. Ondanks het belang van inclusieve taal in nieuwsmedia, zullen nieuwsgebruikers het gebruik ervan niet onmiddellijk accepteren.
